Judy Swanson Contest Report - CJ's Figure Classic The Sunshine Classic represents the beginning of the NPC contest year in Florida, a state with more shows than any other. California has more qualifiers, but Florida has an enviable farm system with local shows catering to novices and generating significant interest in the sport. We can thank pioneers like Peter Potter and Pete Fancher for their tireless work on behalf of the athletes in Florida, building up a contest system that consistently churns out national level talent. The figure turnout and quality at this show remains pretty good year after year, even though it is so early in the season, and that bodes well for 2008. In the figure division, veteran Betsy Arnaiz took the overall title while both Karry Sanhos and Gretchen Lichtenstein looked very impressive while winning the over-30 and over-40 divisions, respectively. In Figure Class A, class winner Betsy Arnaiz was making a little bit of a comeback as many of us remember her trip to Nationals in 2005, where she placed 13th. Betsy has great quads, a solid midsection, and good muscle overall. Second place competitor Heather Frey stood out for her delts, upper chest, and overall symmetry. -------
In this deep class, Cheryl Gregg brought outstanding lines and symmetry, while Yvette Oliverrie stood out for her leg mass and arms but needs to work a bit on her posing. At FigureRX we were also very impressed with Carol Medina, who is a gorgeous athlete with high potential and just needs to add a little more muscle over time. -------
Figure Class B was arguably the strongest, starting with Jaime Shires who returned to the stage in great shape. Jaime competed in fitness several years ago, and we hope that her appearance here means she will be competing again at the national level because she truly has a complete package. We particularly like her delts, back and bicep vascularity. -------
Virginia Olivera stood out with some of the best conditioning of the show, while Joslyn Morse has a great overall shape and has potential but needs to come in a bit harder and work on her presentation, including her tan. Figure Class C had only two athletes, with Mari Redondo taking the class along with the Fitness Medium division (see below for more). -------
Each of the class champions at this show was impressive, and Karry Sanhos sported great abdominals and calves while placing first in Figure Class D and the Masters 30+ division. Tami Delzenero from Fort Lauderdale, one of the top amateurs in Florida, placed 2nd in the class and was just a little bit off relative to her showing the previous weekend at the Arnold Amateur. -------
Equally impressive was the 40+ class winner, Gretchen Lichtenstein, who we think can challenge at the top levels at Masters Nationals in Pittsburgh or the North Americans. We really liked Gretchen's quads and overall leg lines, as well as her midsection and conditioning. Gretchen, who also placed 3rd in open class D, is an inspiring athlete and we look forward to seeing more of her. -------
Two additional competitors who stood out include Anne Panarelli who placed 4th in the over 30 class and 4th in open class D, and Jane Campos who finished second in the over 40 division. Anne was competing in her second show after taking second at the Debbie Kruck Classic last August. -------
Contest Report - CJ's Fitness Classic There were five competitors in the fitness division, and newcomer Heather Overhealt took the short class as well as the overall. Heather was a very deserving winner with great legs, good vascularity, and an entertaining routine. -------
Mari Redondo is a veteran of the Florida competition scene, and we remember seeing her win her class at the 2004 NPC Southern States. Mari won the fitness medium class as well as Figure Class C. -------
Kristine Henisman, who placed second in fitness medium, has a beautiful overall look with excellent abdominals. Kristine had an aggressive routine with an interesting ending, and she has a lot of potential if she can dial in her conditioning a bit more. Michelle Beckman won both the teen figure and fitness divisions. -------
Contest Report - Sunshine Women's Bodybuilding Classic The talent in the Women's Bodybuilding division was mostly concentrated in the Light Heavyweight division, where Barbara "Barbie" Garrido won the class as well as the over 30 division and the overall crown. Barbara won the Masters Middleweight division at the 2005 NPC Southern States, and she stands out for her hamstring, delt and back development - and has a killer side chest pose. The runner-up in the light heavies, Sandra Ramos, also looked impressive and has national level potential. -------
