FigureRX Media Watch - April 2008

Oxygen Magazine
Cover Model Francisca Dennis
MuscleMag Robert Kennedy Oxygen Magazine April 2008 Issue Review
FigureRX Top Five Reasons to Buy

(1) Repeat cover girl Francisca Dennis. Read more about her in our preview for the Arnold Amateur, where she will compete in Figure F (LINK). Frankly, this woman is superhuman and probably deserves a couple of covers per year!

(2) IFBB Figure and Fitness Olympia coverage beginning on Page 154. The more the Oxygen reader demographic is exposed to solid muscle and extreme conditioning the better for the sport, as it encourages more women to bypass "fit" and strive for physique perfection. Hard muscle is still sometimes criticized in the Oxygen Forums, so there is certainly room for growth.

(3) California NPC Figure Star Jamie Costa blows away even our ultra high opinion of her, in a hip joint flexibility article (Page 112). See Jamie soon in the Emerald Cup preview.

(4) Inner thigh training with gorgeous blonde figure competitor Anita Kus (Page 120).

(5) Ontario talent in Future of Fitness. Crystal Scamolla and Justyna Tecza have tremendous figure potential, and if she chooses to Justyna can challenge for a pro card sooner rather than later.

FigureRX Top Ad Watch

(1) NPC figure competitor Teresa Baggett's GAT Jet Fuel advertisement, still one of the best ads of the year. So good it's in there twice. See Teresa in our Arnold Amateur figure preview.

(2) VPX's launch of Redline Power Rush 7-Hour. So rarely is one of the best ads good for all audiences - male, female, hard core, casually fit.

(3) Keeping with an Arnold Amateur theme, Sylvia Tremblay looks incredible in her two AllMax Nutrition RapidCuts ads. She will be competing in the fitness short class.

(4) Ali McKnight in Optimum Nutrition, the almost fully clothed look is refreshing and different. We weren't huge fans of the tongue wagging ad, it was a bit too suggestive as a huge poster at events, so we're hoping this one will show up as the booth backdrop.

(5) Angela Mraz promoting her own fitness camp. That's the kind of thing that just sells itself.

FigureRX Best:
Page 143 - VPX's ads launching Redline Power Rush are genius, and the product itself is a direct trump on infomercial product Five Hour Energy. Campaigns like this will go a long way toward helping VPX fend off Endorush.
Page 185 - FAME figure champion Stephanie Strong in military gear for the CON-CRET advertisement. Check out their booth at the Arnold.
Page 218 - An off-season feature on amateur figure athlete Brandy Leaver, who won the 2007 NPC Stingray Classic in Hawaii. This high school wrestler is also Stan McQuay's girlfriend, creating a neat tie-in to the cover.
Page 244 - Pro figure superstar Jessica Paxson-Putnam is half of one of the best signings in Weider history, and she is a tremendous example in so many ways. Anything Jessica does looks great, and in this article she trains delts and provides info on her start in figure.

FigureRX Stay Away:
Page 122 - Wrestling rug burn meets cage MMA in a feature on Kimbo Slice. Somebody introduce this guy to Patriots owner Robert Kraft so he can get a Gillette.
Page 150 - We understand the trend toward multi-page scientific ads but Lipodrene goes too far with a full ten pages. Although the Thermo Ephedra Extract does look promising.
