Hey everybody, just wanted to get this ball rollin' on some discussion. One question I like to ask other competitors are how they manage their off-season diet, or if they have one....:P There are no wrong or right answers here, so please let us know! :)

HEY ALI IT'S DANI WELL IT REALLY DEPENDS HOW YOUR BODY RESPONDS TO DIETING AND SUPPS. HOWEVER I TRY TO STAY EATING CLEAN ALL YEAR ROUND BUT I DO ALLOW MYSELF CHEAT DAYS. FOR EXAMPLE ON WEDNESDAYS I'LL HAVE A FATS AND PROTEINS CHEAT FOR AN HOUR..LIKE BUFFALO CHICKEN FINGERS FROM CHILIS. THEN ON SATURDAYS ILL HAVE A CHEAT FOR AN HOUR OF ANYTHING I WANT....PIZZA, PASTA SOMETHING REALLY YUMMY...

I HEAR YOU ARE UP ONLY ONE POUND SINCE USA'S GIRL, THAT IS GREAT FOR YOUR OFF SEASON BECAUSE IT WILL HELP THIN YOUR SKIN OUT FOR WHEN WE START COMPETING.

I HOPE YOU'RE DOING GREAT..I TORE MY MCL AND I'M READY TO COME BACK NEXT YEAR WITH A BANG...HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON.
DANI

DANI!!! Great to hear from you girl! Glad to hear you're up and about again, I'm so sorry to hear about the injury, that sucks! Make sure you take plenty of time to make sure everything heals properly so you're 100% next year... i know i have a tendancy to try to push too much too fast... it only took me 7 years since graduating college, but i'm finally learning to listen to my body instead of "push through the pain" like i always did back then... I guess i'm just not 20 anymore ;-)

Off season diet, eh? I try to stick to a strickly see-food diet ;-) hehe, actually, i'm trying to keep my diet as close as possible, and will be experimenting a lot this year with different types of new grains to see how my body reacts to them... I've always had problems with my blood sugar fluctuating - for no apparent reason at all i'll get so shaky i can't take another step, and carry sugar candies in my bag all the time for such occasions... however, when i'm on my diet, i very rarely have these problems... My mom was also diagnosed this year with pre-diabetic fasting blood sugar levels, and diabetes runs in the family...

So, she and i are working together finding good recipes for high fiber, whole grain, slow burning carb recipes, which i'm happy to share if anybody's interested (and please, share with me if you have any!). And I'll definitely be keeping you all up to speed with how it all goes!

hey ladies.... :) Great to see you back Dani... Jamie I talk to all the time (ahahaha) and Ali GREAT post topic!!!

Off season diet again depends I think on how you feel during competitons and how your body responds to dieting for a show. I know that when I make alterations to my diet my body usually responds rapidly, it always has. I have a genetic tendency to be on the thin side ( I was VERY thin prior to weightlifting), so during my aff season I'm not as stringent as some competitors. I like to keep myself lean since I do so many photo shoots, but at the same time I also believe in giving your body a break and allowing it to regroup.

I still track my protein and carb ratios in the off season but I don't worry as much about fats and sugars. I still eat 5-6 meals a day, and I keep them clean but there are daily cheats in there, such as fruits, snacks, whole wheat toast...and occasionally I indulge in my favorite cheats which are pizza and hooters fried pickles in hot sauce haha.

Overall I'd say I eat fairly clean year round...there is some method to the madness but I allow myself to cheat or to eat foods I wouldn't normally eat during a diet phase. Most of those foods are good for you anyhow, like skim milk or nonfat yogurt- both of which would be considered a cheat by competition standards, but are not as detrimental as say pizza or buffalo chicken tenders.

The other main difference in my off season is that I eat until I am full- i.e if I'm eating grilled chicken caesar salad and it comes with 6 ounces of chicken but I want 12... I eat 12. I eat when I'm hungry and I don't when I'm not. I do not exercise as much portion control in my off season.

I also indulge in the occasional captain and morgan (my favorite) in my offseason... AND stop for the occasional calorie laden coffee drink in my... I'm a starbucks nut.

Dieting is not only strenuous on the body, it's strenuous on the mind and although eating well is my lifestyle (therefore occuring year round), I also believe in giving yourself time to regroup physically and mentally... by not being so strict with your food habits.

Very well said!!! I think we're rather similar - i've been eating fruit all week and loving it!!! Hehehe, how sad, i'm 'off' and all i want is Fruit!!!

What the heck is a fried pickle by the way??? Pickles... good... fried... umm, good...? Fried pickle... not so sure...

I'm a sucker for my favorite slovak restaurant, which i've managed to stay far away from - they have a version of mac and cheese, but it's like mac and cheese on crack... potato noodles with goat cheese, then they crumble bacon on top... but it's not american bacon, it's slovak bacon - giant chunks of fried bacon... that'll put some meat on your bones!!!

Great post Ali and Jamie. During the off season I try to eat fairly clean, however some days I just have to eat something from my favorite cheat meal list, i.e french fries...love it! But I also still eat 5 to 6 meals daily and I try to make sure I have a good amount of protein and good carbs. I too have the genetics to get very thin....um actually just plain out skinny, so I have to make sure I eat my meals and not over do it on cardio.

I am with you Jamie, Ali what the heck is fried pickles?

haha fried pickles are just that...deep fried whole dill pickles. In hot sauce. Strange I know... but I love them.

And Teresa I understand about being skinny- prior to lifting I weighed 110-115 pounds and all of the muscle I have gained has been through hard lifting and diet. :) And I have to work that much harder to ensure that I don't go flat during or prior to a show.

Man, if left unchecked, in the off season i'd bet i could work my way back up to 170, with very low bodyfat, no problem... my two sisters poke fun at me that i get bigger just looking at a set of weights...

I ate a whole jar of pickles last night. They were not fried. They were not dipped in hot sauce... and i still loved every one of them! They were those little ones that look like sweet pickles, but are actually dill - this is what i'm imagingin you're frying, or are you talking about 'WHOLE' pickles, like the kind you'd buy at disneyland or something!?!? Okay, i'm sure you don't think of a normal pickle as a disneyland pickle, but they serve them there with cinamon sticks stuck in them. I was in third grade, and this is what i remember of disneyland... good lord...

You gals and your love for pickles...interesting! I have enjoyed them a little but not enough to eat a whole jar. hee hee.

Jamie, I wish I could look at some weights and just grow, NOT! I have to try and lift the whole gym for that to happen. :D

I think my overall opinion in this forum is this: while you absolutely cannot maintain contest shape year round (nor is it healthy), it's also detrimental to your success as a competitor to just "let yourself go" in your off season. By this I mean, you can't realistically look 100% on contest day if you haven't maintained a clean and consistent off-season diet. You can't go from eating pizza and burgers all winter and attempt to clean it up come January and expect to enter a show in May. While you may make some physical changes, you won't be in the shape you could have been if you ate well in the off-season. Off-season is the time to build muscle quality and density. It's extremely difficult to attempt to build density and lose body fat at the last minute. So I really feel that eating well off season is important but allow yourself to cheat as well. Cheat meals spike the metabolism and allow you to enjoy food for food again rather then just visualizing food for fuel.

I advise eating clean but not exercising as much portion control. So for example stick with grilled chicken but if you're hungry for 12 ounces, not 6, eat 12 ounces. Allow your body to bulk and build some muscle.:)

Phew I'm done now
