Contest Report - Open Figure Division

Welcome to the FigureRX contest report for what is rapidly becoming one of the more competitive local shows in the country. Its growth has been led by Beverly Nutrition, a well respected supplement company with an effective product line. The figure division was expanded from four to six height classes. As happens every year at this first major show in the mid-atlantic region, a few figure stars were born. The first was Autumn Edwards, a 23-year old trainer, group instructor and spanish teacher from Somerset, Kentucky. The Northern Kentucky was her first show and she swept the toughest class (D) as well as the overall. Autumn has a classic, sleek figure physique with the capped delts, etched abs, long muscle bellies, and just enough quad separation to make her really stand out. We expect Autumn to test herself at the national level in Chicago in a few weeks. Please go to the bottom of this contest report to see her FigureRX spotlight athlete interview for this event.

-----------------------------------------------------Open Figure Class A

In Figure Class A, Alisa Williams won the title based on her tremendous overall symmetry as well as her conditioning and vascularity. She has superb abdominal development and swept the two piece round. In second place, Lavonda Ezell has a great deal of figure potential starting with an excellent upper body. Lavonda needs to improve her thigh conditioning, but her symmetry was evident in the one piece round where she received first place votes from three of the judges.

-------Image

Rhonda Brownlee has a sleek physique that we really like a lot, and she will move up at another show if she is able to improve the cut of her one piece suit, which created an illusion of width and made her shoulders look more sloping. Rhonda has good arms it's a matter of making sure she is displaying her strengths in the best possible way. There were a few physiques at this show that have tremendous structure and potential but need to display that promise by improving conditioning and hardness. Alicia Gifford has a total package, including beauty and presentation along with some of our favorite abs of the contest, and she can go far in the sport if she can dial in her lower body conditioning.

-------Image

Rachel Speed finished last in the class, but we hope she is encouraged to do more shows after also working on her conditioning and her contest color. Rachel is beautiful, and she actually showed off some of the best overall lines of the evening. She also brought a lot of personality to the stage (even a bicep flex) that we appreciated!

-------Image

-----------------------------------------------------Open Figure Class B

Michelle Yeager was the clear winner in Class B, with her total, symmetrical physique. We actually know Michelle as an excellent writer as well, but in Kentucky she turned a lot of heads with her back, glutes and hamstrings, and she will be ready to compete at the national level with a little more upper body size.

-------Image

Ashlie Ryan placed second and was particulary strong in her one piece posing suit, while Annie Shebuski has excellent abdominal development.

-------Image

Among the rest of the class, Jamie Lambert jumped out at us as a future figure star. She has the genetic lines including long muscle bellies and structure to truly excel if she decides to pack a little more size onto her frame.

-------Image

-----------------------------------------------------Open Figure Class C

Figure Class C brought quality from top to bottom, starting with Nadine Baker who was extremely well conditioned and who took first place. With a few changes to her presentation, such as suit adjustments and maybe a little less hair which can distract from a physique, she will be able to challenge for the overall. We're already fans of Christina Watson so it was nice to see her here, sporting an excellent six-pack and well-developed arms.

-------Image

Fourth place finisher Shelby Swaney is another competitor who has a chance to be something special in the sport if she puts on a little size. She is gorgeous, with nicely capped delts and a very tight waist. Her leg lines are oustanding and she's not that far away from making an impact.

-------Image

Also in Class C, Sheila Mettler had some of our favorite abs of the night while we liked Michelle Yatsuk's overall size.

-------Image

The strength of this class is evident when you look at Amanda Bolin and Alana Brock, who placed 9th and 7th respectively. Amanda is also a future star if she wants to be, and she already stands out for her overall symmetry and calve development. Alana is sleek with good side abs, delt vascularity, and hamstring lines.

-------Image

-----------------------------------------------------Open Figure Class D

Class D was the largest and most talented of the night, and exhibited the most in the way of immediate national level potential. Autumn Edwards won the class on her way to the overall title, by taking the two piece round. Maja Varner placed second but she actually won the one piece round by two points (7 to 9) and she could have probably challenged for second or third in the overall. Her beautiful, symmetrical physique is evident in the photo below.

-------Image

Bethany Karlin landed solidly in third place on the strength of her outstanding conditioning, as well as her overall symmetry including sleek, shapely legs with small knee joints. You know that Amanda Robinson is a FigureRX favorite just by looking at the level of muscularity that she brought to the stage, with the most important thing being the symmetrical and beautiful way that she distributes and wears the extra mass. We'd love to see Amanda compete nationally. Sue Knott placed 5th and looked amazing in her two piece, where she was able to show off her great midsection. Sue's rear view symmetry already powered her to the top five finish and the national qualification.

-------Image

One of our favorite athletes of the night, Kim Cory, landed in the 6th place slot and she brings a lot of potential that we hope she'll follow through with in a future show. Amber Stone had beautiful symmetry and we were surprised to find her down in 8th place, but that's what sometimes happens when the participation levels in the various classes are a little off.

-------Image

There were several other athletes who might have had a shot to be top five in another class and you can see some of them below.

FigureRX Spotlight Interview - Autumn Edwards
FigureRX Online Magazine Volume 4

One of the most fun aspects of figure competitions is the occasional emergence of an athlete who seems to come out of nowhere. Last year we coined the phrase "pulling a Brandi" in honor of Tennessee athlete Brandi Binkley, who won the Tennessee State championships last year and then swept her class a couple weeks later at the North American Championships. But these things don't just happen. Like Brandi, our FigureRX Northern Kentucky spotlight athlete Autumn Edwards is a student of the game who has been preparing for her moment on stage for quite a while. We have Autumn's blog coming through to our Google Reader as she prepares for her next show, and we think you should too.

Genetically, a championship figure physique starts with two basic things - beautiful overall symmetry and superb focal points like delts and abdominals. Autumn starts with that base, as well as long muscle bellies and small joints, and as she puts on a little more mass this 23-year old's lines will only get better over time. If you add on her determination and her ability to soak up knowledge about all aspects of the sport, we believe you will see Autumn on a pro stage within the next two years and we're excited to see how she will fare at Junior Nationals in Chicago.

Please tell us a little bit about your background, such as where you grew up, your family, other athletics, when you began weight training, and how you became interested in competing.

As a kid, I was glued to physique competitions on television. As an adult, I can participate! It took me two years to step on stage after watching my first show and meeting with an IFBB professional. My competition interest continued to grow as a spectator and aspirant. Although I debated on competing in the Northern Kentucky last year and decided to compete there since this past November, I've really been preparing my entire life for this. I've never known my life without arduous exercise, focused nutrition, and tenacious athletic goals. My physical fitness interest began strongly in high school and grew even stronger in college as I began instructing group fitness, personal training, life guarding, entering 5k's and a mini-marathon, and so on.

What is your academic and professional background? What is your current occupation and how long have you been doing it?

I earned my BA in Exercise Science & Spanish from Transylvania University and have taken on many jobs in group fitness, personal training, athletic training, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nutrition, and athletics. Currently, I am a high school Spanish teacher (temporary filling in for a permanent teacher on medical leave) in the mornings, a college physics student (preparing myself for the original plan of physical therapy graduate work) in the afternoons, and an ISSA certified personal trainer in the evenings.

What is your training philosophy (heavy or light, cardio, lifting)? Any particular body parts that you consider to be strengths, or weaknesses?

You've got to train heavy enough for your body to respond! You can always train like a man and never look like one! Desirable results are attributed to 80% nutrition and supplementation, 15% resistance training, and 5% cardio. Top priority for me right now is getting my backside to match my front. My glute-ham area and calves need lots of bringing up and I could use more quad separation and greater sweep.

How did you feel on stage at your first show, and what was your reaction to your win?

On stage I was very comfortable so this was a great sign for my first show! Ironically, I was very at ease the last week of contest preparation and the show weekend ran unbelievably smooth. My reaction to winning was…disbelief! I remember just getting ready to step in place when I heard “fifth…..fourth….third….second…” and then I could barely hold my legs under me. Then to go on and win the overall later that night just topped the happiest moment of my life a few hours earlier! I've always been “second best' and to win something that already carried more significance than anything I'd done by just being there was really something. I still am shaking my head as I write this.

-------Image

Is there anything in particular that you plan to focus on before competing nationally?

Alongside the posterior priority training I mentioned, I am aiming to gain 3 lbs of lean muscle by the show. I am also keeping everything as measurable and simple as I can so that I can monitor and make progressions accordingly and stress free. I am also working on better nutrition and training logging, online networking, and resource usage!

Where do you find the best training and diet advice? Where do you work out and who do you work out with? Is there anyone in particular who you would like to thank, such as a sponsor, significant other, etc?

Honestly, I try not to blur my vision with what everyone else is doing, but the list includes Beverly International and International Sports Sciences Association (especially their private forum) and occasionally forums from http://www.ironaddicts.com, http://www.irontrybe.com, http://www.t-nation.com, and http://www.bodybuilding.com. I work out and personal train at the Somerset Athletic Club and the YMCA. I work out alone because motivation is not a problem for me, I am training specifically for my needs, and I am not in the gym to mess around or make small talk. If I need a spot or a partner I just grab someone. In the beginning of my contest prep, I did work out with my now significant other doing a German Volume Training 10x10 that we hope to do more of. He's also the one that introduced me to the forums and I'd like to thank him, all my sponsors (I had t-shirts made displaying them), my friends, my family, and above all God. At the forefront of my mind is always the verse, “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." (1st John 4:4)

Do you have any role models in fitness / figure?

IFBB Pro Julie Lohre.

Thanks Autumn!!
