FigureRX Contest Preview: 2007 Atlantic City Pro Figure Championships

Previewing professional figure and fitness shows feels quite a bit different than covering amateur events for the simple reason that every single athlete is, by definition, at the top of her sport. An IFBB pro card is the goal of so many athletes from beginners and local competitors to the best in the NPC, and those who achieve that goal deserve our admiration and respect. The judges seem to have an impossible task choosing the top three among an incredibly strong group, and we also have to adjust our predictions based on the differing physique preferences at the pro level.

With 28 phenomenal figure athletes already qualified for the Olympia (see the list in our Figure Olympia coverage thread Here), the big question to be answered at Atlantic City (and the following week at the Tournament of Champions) will be if that list will be expanded. The last three IFBB pro figure shows sent a total of only three additional competitors to Las Vegas, and one of those was Adela Garcia who plans to compete in fitness. At FigureRX we are getting the sense that stage management at the Olympia is one of the factors in the judging (and competitor recruitment) at the pro shows – there is such a thing as having too many athletes on the big stage, especially when the vast majority of them are from the United States.

-------------------------Danielle Hollenshade

So any preview must start with the athletes who have already qualified for the Olympia stage. Florida's Danielle Hollenshade is the only confirmed competitor in Atlantic City who has already secured her place, by virtue of her third place finish at the Sacramento Pro last year. As a result, Danielle is one of our favorites for the top three here as the IFBB seeks to “manage” the Olympia stage. We believe that Danielle will look the part in this Olympia warm-up and she will deserve a top three finish.

-------------------------------Paola Almerico

Another Floridian who has a chance at a top placing in Atlantic City is Paola Almerico, who finished 8th at the Motor City Pro (her debut) and 7th at the Europa. We appreciate the look that Paola brings to each contest, she has a combination of beauty and symmetry that allows the judges to justify allowing a little more conditioning and muscle separation – all of which we favor. At FigureRX we would have placed Paola much higher in both shows and we know she has been preparing harder than ever for her chance at the Olympia stage this year.

------------Jelena Abbou-----------------------------Cheri Lewis

The three athletes representing the pro card class of 2006 are all spectacular and we expect all to do well in this show. One look at gorgeous Serbian competitor Jelena Abbou brings to mind those ultra-hot print ads for Biotest and T-Nation, where we learned that she was working on her conditioning a little bit to get ready for the pro stage. Well whatever she did worked! Jelena came in very tight, perhaps a little too much so for the judges at the Jan Tana, but then she softened up a bit to grab a 7th place spot at the New York Pro. Her ratios are amazing, if not for the etchings on her abs her waist would almost disappear from view during her side poses. We expect Jelena to be awarded her best finish as a pro in Atlantic City, and we'd also like to give a shout out to one of the best corporate teams out there: the crew at T-Nation's Muscle Sorority. Jelena, Gina Aliotti, Olesya Novik, and Jen Heath are an incredible group and we love their work on the site!

------------Lisa Morton-----------------------------Heather Green

At FigureRX we're big fans of symmetrical muscle mass on a tall athlete, so we're glad that Cheri Lewis will be making the trip up from Virginia. Cheri has one of our favorite pro physiques from her capped delts down to her excellent calf development. This will be her fifth show during her first year on the IFBB circuit, and she has done consistently well including a 4th place at the California State Pro. Cheri went pro while winning the tall class at Nationals in 2006, edging out another favorite Amy Fry who is already qualified for the Olympia. We'd like to think that she has a shot a top three finish in Atlantic City. Lisa Morton is the third competitor in the 2006 group, and she was a whisker away from a qualification with her 4th place finish at the Europa. Lisa also has an extremely small and tight midsection with overall symmetry, but she particularly stands out in her arms and delts.

------------Shelly Taucher-------------------------Becky Clawson

We're glad to see several class of 2007 pro card winners at this show, including Paola, looking to follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Gates who has already qualified for the big stage. In fact there are just as many 2007 athletes here as 2005 and 2006 competitors (three each). Both of the Class C pro card winners at 2007 Nationals will be making their professional debuts. Becky Clawson lives in Ohio and works with trainer Mike Davies, and we love her positive outlook toward the sport and competition. Heather Green seems like a polished pro already with her victories in other organizations, and she has an outstanding physique with an especially great lower body, so it is hard to think of this as her debut. This is a tough lineup overall but Becky and Heather will definitely be noticed during their first trip to the pro stage.

The 2005 figure pro card class is full of superstars, in fact they may be the most successful class in history. Danielle Hollenshade is class of 2005, but we are also pleased to say that one of the better members of this group will be returning to the stage after a lengthy absence. Michigan native Shelly Taucher, the tall class winner at the USA championships, has the type of physique that we think can help move the needle of IFBB professional judging in the United States more toward domestic NPC and international IFBB standards, which would be a good thing. We're excited to see the type of package that Shelly will present at Atlantic City.

------------Claire Parmley-------------------------Debbie Leung

Another athlete who brings a lot of muscle to the stage but also exhibits near perfect lines and symmetry is Georgian Claire Parmley. We were happy to see her return to competition and feel that she should have placed much higher in her previous shows, especially the Europa which had a softer, inconsistent lineup. Claire has the type of physique that could score a unanimous win at the NPC amateur level these days, and we hope the judges in Atlantic City recognize that and treat her well. Debbie Leung is one of our favorite Canadian competitors who carries the right amount of muscle, including some of the best delt and quad development on stage. Debbie also has the ability to come in ultra-conditioned without looking drawn in her face, which allows her to present one of the more beautiful overall looks in the pro ranks.

------------Michelle Adams-------------------------Marie Gibbon

Michelle Adams is a top contender in any show that she enters, and she recently placed 6th at the Europa. She does a good job of conforming to judging standards at any given show, but we like her best when she's filled out and ripped like in the photo here. Michelle appears courtesy of JMP Management (who put that photo up - not me! ). Texas bombshell Jennifer Cook will be returning to the stage after a five year absence, and we look forward to the changes that she has made to her physique for this show (but we have no contest pictures to share). Arizona and class of 2005 athlete Andrea Dumon placed 9th at the Europa, and we'd like to see her put on some additional upper body size or not lean out as extensively in order to move up.

Marie Gibbon has been competing internationally for a while and she brings a European style package, which is full, ripped and symmetrical. We love her figure lines. Fitness competitor Alti Bautista has a large national fan base and a beautiful look. She will be switching to figure for this show. We'll be taking our first look at Alejandra Abdala of Argentina, and we're somewhat confused by Zoraida Figueroa-Rivera's entry because we believe she just competed as a bodybuilder at the Europa. If she is indeed making a switch we're all for it and wish her the best.

As far as I know the meeting at 2pm (or 3pm - check when you get there ) on Friday is for all athletes except for NPC figure.

Fitness competitors and female bodybuilders have the option to check in / weigh in at the 8am Saturday meeting. Both meetings are in the arena (see schedule).
