It's Official - NPC Major Rule Changes Announced for 2009

image Will having a bikini division finally allow for more muscular, hardcore physiques in "figure"? We can only hope.

As BW previously announced, the one piece posing suit judging round for both figure and fitness has been eliminated in the NPC. Here are the rest of the official changes, based on the NPC Board of Governor's meeting at Nationals in Atlanta, including a description of the new bikini division.

November 23, 2008

Special for Bodybuilding Weekly

Discuss these rule changes in our forums.

The following rule changes (or non-changes as applicable) have been officially announced to Bodybuilding Weekly, based on the results of voting during the National Physique Committee (NPC) Board of Governor's meeting at the NPC National Championships in Atlanta last weekend.  Most of the modifications are designed to increase participation and revenues for the NPC during difficult economic times, although some will also benefit competitors.

(1)  The cost of NPC membership, and receipt of an NPC card, will increase to $85 per year.  Result:  Increase in revenues to the NPC national office.  This is still one of the lower costs of competing so the bump up is unlikely to change athlete participation.

(2)  After much debate, it is expected that the height classes for figure will remain as they were in 2008.  The 2008 height classes seemed to result in fewer competitors in classes A and F, but the differentials were not big enough to cause major concern.  Result:  No change, and we agree.  The height classes were better in 2008 than in 2007.

(3)  As previously announced on Bodybuilding Weekly, the one piece posing suit round has been eliminated for both NPC fitness and NPC figure.  The one piece round is expected to remain at the IFBB professional level.  Result:  See our list of winners and losers in the article where we announced the change a few weeks ago.

As a result of this, figure will now have only one judging round while fitness judging will be split 50-50 between the two piece round and the routines.

(4)  Competitors will now need to qualify for national level shows more frequently.  Instead of being qualified for two full years, qualifications will now be valid for one year.  Because NQ status is based on a calendar year, you will be qualified for the rest of the year during which you qualify, plus one more full year.  Qualification may still be two years for the USA Championships and Nationals, but further clarification is necessary.

If you qualified in 2007 you will be "grandfathered," meaning your qualification will be good until December 31, 2009.

Result:  More competitors competing at the state and local level, money for local promoters, and possibly lower participation at the national level.  Be sure to check NPCschedule.com all year long so you know which shows in your area are national qualifiers, and to allow yourself time to requalify if necessary.

2009 NPC schedule

(5)  There will be no more "crossover qualifications."  Your qualification will be good for only the division in which you qualified.  So if you qualified in figure you can compete in figure at nationals, not in any other division (fitness, bodybuilding or bikini).  You can qualify for different divisions at different shows but you can pick only one in which to compete at any given national show.

The ability to cross over at state and locatl shows is left to the discretion of the district chairperson.

If a competitor qualifies as a Masters competition, they are limited to competing in the masters divisions.

(6)  A much needed additional pro card has been added for women's bodybuilding, to the second place overall finisher at the USA Championships.

(7)  The new "Bikini" division is now a reality, for better or for worse.  It will have the same height classes as figure (see the official rules as classification varies depending on the number of classes at each show).  Bikini competitors may not crossover into any other division at the same event.  Bikini competitors will wear two piece posing suits, which may or may not be similar to a "figure" two piece suit.  Suit bottoms must be v-shaped and no thongs will be permitted.  Jewelry is allowed and heels may or may not be the clear acrylic (any color of heels allowed).

Bikini competitors will walk to the center of the stage individually, do a single turn (not four poses like in figure), then walk to stage right.  All competitors will be brought to the center line and compared facing front and back only (no quarter turns).  The judges will be scoring based on balance, shape and overall physical appearance including poise, complexion, skin tone and overall presentation. Competitors are not to "pose" as in figure with shoulder blades pulled apart and muscles tight.  The top 5 in each height class will qualify for nationals at an NPC national qualifying (NQ) event.  NPCschedule.com will provide a list of all state and local shows that will be including a bikini division.

Result:  An entire new division will result in more revenues for promoters, and will directly challenge other physique federations that have existing bikini divisions.  With a new competitive outlet for those athletes who prefer to compete with less muscularity or with a softer look, we are hoping that there will be less "watering down" of the figure division - that means more substantive muscle and better conditioning in figure, for athletes who prefer to look that way.  The end results remain to be seen.

I'm on the small end of bodybuilding. I'm very lean, but I'm not thick, and really dont want to get any thicker, I tried to compete in figure, but was told I was to hard/muscular etc. But, then in bodyblding, I'm too small, so now will my physique be figure material. Pictures of this yrs competion that I've done are on musculardevelopment. I really enjoy competing, but I'm at a stand still, which way do I go? plz advise.
thank you kindly

I am so pleased to hear this, I actually had to gain 10lbs to compete at the NPC level for figure competitions yet have great balance for my frame, so I think this will be a great venture for me to do the bikini category.

What does it mean by "Bikini competitors will wear two piece posing suits, which may or may not be similar to a "figure" two piece suit."
Does this mean I cannot have a custom made crystalized suit like the figure competitors?

Penny,

I'm with you. I have no idea what they are looking for in figure anymore. I thought that by adding a "bikini" division, they would bring figure back to what it used to be and no longer require the softer look. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

haha wow. I should have known this before taking a lot of time OFF after my 2008 figure season to atrophy muscle, since I was told I was much too big for figure at my last contest. I'm assuming the larger look for figure will be allowed now?

oh geez, bikini... because it takes hours in the gym and crazy ass diets to look good in a bikini. Ha. But you could be right, maybe they will like the harder look in figure. I will miss the one piece though. Now there will be less stage time :(

Bikini...oh come on guys!!!!! You can't be serious. Alot of woman can look great in a bikini. Not all that difficult. Woman who train for figure and bodybuilding work hard to get their bodies. Bad choice

Come on ! NPC and beauty pageants/swimsuit pageants ? Due to economic reasons they are trying to figure out more ways to make money. If they think this will help they are mistaken. People are going to compete more only to be raped by the politics of the judging. Now compete more and spend more of your hard earned money on your disappointing(unfair in some circumstances) placings. Looks like the NPC should consider trying to place people fairly and hope that this will get more people to compete. Lets get real times are tough and people aren't going to be giving something for nothing. I putting my money back into the stock market !!!

Sometime ago we should have thought about the circumstances of what might happen if politics messes up the sport like it does most other sports. This NPC was originally done mostly for/and by people who wanted to volunteer because they loved the sport and the industry and instead people got involved and tried to make it a cash cow for themselves. The same who run the local states as NPC chairman are also gym owners and trainers and let their clients/ members place higher while others suffer. On the National Level the most reputable trainers clients seem to get the best looks and place higher? What is the NPC contribution for a high placing cost these days? It's gotta be cheaper during these hard economic times I would assume. It's a shame but this might be close to the end of organized bodybuilding as we know it. Joe and Ben Weider(RIP) must be disappointed to hear what is going on with the sport they worked so hard to establish. Arnold please help us!!!!!!

I just competed in the Arnold 2009 amateure fbb, Im lightweight, this yr I came in 13 lbs heavier @ 123.5, and felt better about my physic than last yrs 111 lbs, But, as Im waiting to go on stage at prejudging the ladies in front of me were talking about the TWO PRO women in our class, this is amateure, they became pro in thier country, they are"pro", why did they do this comp, I love competing and will try to continue, but every comp I get the judges input on my needed improvements, so in off season last yr, I worked my ass off to do so, it's hard enough to compete, but when you find out there are pro's in your class, where do you go from here. I will most likely never be on a "PRO" stage as the olympia, or the Arnold, because Im lightweight, and I like being lightweight, but when you go pro, in or out of your own country....MOVE ON!!!!! But anyway, this yrs Arnold wkend was the best, It was soooo good to see Monica Brant back on stage....

Hey gals. Dont get too excited about the NPC going for the bigger harder look. I just got back from The Arnold Amateur where I won my height class. I have to admit I am on the smaller side compared to most and so were the rest of the 5 fianlists. I would say the overall winner was also on the softer side but did look great. As far as bikini went.... skinny skinny skinny with big boobs. Beautiful girls but not what I would pick for a bikini model. The 2nd place in the tall group had it hands down and the judges got booed for a while. So good luck. Its a crap shoot! :)
