A Hamilton, New Jersey man is facing six years in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of distributing both cocaine and the performance enhancing drugs human growth hormone and anabolic steroids.
Steven Suarez, 43, took a plea deal in court on Thursday, and information about the development in the case was released yesterday by the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.
Suarez was arrested in April after an investigation of several months probed the Hamilton man's activities and led to a raid on his Graffam Avenue home, where investigators found a sizeable drug stash.
At the time of Suarez's arrest, officials said they seized 20 grams of cocaine and a large quantity of the performance enhancers. They found HGH and steroids in powder, liquid and pill form out in the open on the kitchen counter, in the microwave and in the refrigerator.
The bust came as the prosecutor's office was also investigating the alleged illegal use and procurement of HGH by a group of Trenton police officers, though officials would not say if there was any connection between the two investigations.
Prosecutor spokeswoman Casey DeBlasio said at the time that other arrests were likely to follow in the wake of Suarez's apprehension, though no related busts have been announced.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Trenton police and HGH has been handed over to the state attorney general, and it was recently reported that a number of officers have received "target" letters compelling their cooperation in the case.
The entire investigation dates back to the steroid bust of Florida dentist Dr. Jeffrey Weiser, sold prescriptions for testosterone, human growth hormone (HGH), Deca Durabolin, Winstrol, Oxandrin, Nolvadex and Clomid to bodybuilders on the Internet for $50 per script per medication. Cops from the Trenton Police Department were allegedly clientele of Weiser's 'personal fitness consulting business.' Insurance fraud may also be involved if officers used health insurance to cover the costs of the anabolics.
