Derek Gates, Amateur Bodybuilder, Passes Away

Special for Bodybuilding Weekly

Derek Gates, the husband of reigning Figure Olympia champion and IFBB professional figure competitor Jennifer Gates, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 8th.

Memorial services will be held from 3pm to 8pm on Thursday the 11th and the funeral will be at noon on Friday the 12th, both local Indianapolis time. The location is as follows:

Jen was in her early 20’s and divorced with a young son when she met Derek while studying in nursing school. The two married a few years later and had a daughter Adelyn. Derek was also a competitive bodybuilder, and competed with Jen in her first show in 2001.

Derek was a builder for Gates Homes for 13 years and most recently worked for Ray Skillman Auto Centers. He was a member of J.P. Premier Fitness Club and attended Spirit of Life Church in Martinsville.

Derek's survivors include Jen, his three children, Adelyn Jade Gates, Peyton Jones, and Belhamie Walls, his parents Belinda Darlene Burnett and Larry C. Gates; a stepmother, Gale Gates, grandparents Catherine and Charles Gates and Hazel England, his two sisters Erin Burnett and Sara Thompson, and his brother, Larry Sean Gates.
